50 grams of glucose
saw dr. dobrenis today for the glucose screening test. i had to drink 50 grams of glucose in 5 minutes. tasted like orange soda. wasn't bad at all. i had to wait one hour before they took a blood test. while we waited, dr. dobrenis measured my tummy - 26.5 cm from bottom to top. she also listened to the baby's heartbeat. there's our dragon! asked her when we would get another ultrasound (i miss the little guy!) and she said not until 35 weeks but we can do it during our next appt wit her (can't wait). she asked us about travel plans and told her we were going to CA for 2 weeks and back there again mid-jan for the baby showers. also told her i may be going to toronto for work in january. she said if i'm not up for it, she can write me a note to get out of it. will def see how i feel! i asked her about a few things:
i'm a little worried about the test. a positive result would mean that i have to take the 3-hour glucose tolerance test (100 grams of glucose!) to find out if i have gestational diabetes. unfortunately, diabetes runs in both of our families. dr. dobrenis mentioned usually shorter/smaller pregnant women tend to have it. she'll call us on monday with the results. praying that everything goes well. fingers and toes crossed.
- baby's hiccups -> they mean that the baby is practicing breathing which is a good sign!
- hair loss -> as long as i'm not losing more hair now than before i got pregnant, should be ok
- crusty nipples -> she confirmed it's colostrum and she said i can rub it in the shower but not pick at it
- deep-tissue massage -> totally fine! no off-limit areas. also doesn't have to be a prenatal place but i would be more comfortable with the belly cutout on the table. i can go sideways too. she said the massage may cause a cramp but nothing that would make the baby come out earlier.
- cord blood banking -> her take on it is to donate to a public bank. there is a 1:10k chance that our baby would need it. if we do it, more likely will be used for the sibling. she said if money is not an issue, we can certainly do whatever we want. but we said we need money for the crib, diapers and food. ha
- peeing issue -> normal during pregnancy because of the pressure and for a short period after delivery (even for women who do c-section). she told me to do 5 sets of 10 kegels daily and try to stop as i'm peeing to strengthen my muscles
